‘AI in the Clinic’, new Wellcome Trust Seed Project

We are delighted that Annamaria Carusi’s project ‘AI in the Clinic’, has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, under the themed call for Seed project in AI in Healthcare and Medicine. The project is a collaboration between Medical Humanities, the Pulmonary and Vascular Diseases Unit  at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine, and iHuman. It will formally begin in February 2019.

The focus of the project is on multiple, intersecting AI applications in real world clinical contexts. In these contexts, AI applications are not single, discrete entities, but are interconnected with other AI applications, and with existing practices and technologies, that all affect patients’ diagnoses and treatments. The project aims first, to gain an understanding of how AI development actually occurs in these settings, and second, to test ways in which AI can be developed with foresight into its potential effects.
